This week at the movies: Benedict Cumberbatch stars as a superhero in Marvel’s masterful remake of Doctor Strange; Trolls – the famous toy dolls known for their neon tufts of hair – finally come to life on screen and make us all jump for joy; and Hacksaw Ridge tells the true story of a brave pacifist who becomes an unexpected war hero.

Doctor Strange

Dr. Stephen Strange's (Benedict Cumberbatch) life changes after a car accident robs him of the use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he looks for healing, and hope, in a mysterious enclave. He quickly learns that the enclave is at the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying reality. Before long, Strange is forced to choose between his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence. Also starring Tilda Swinson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Rachel McAdams.

Rated PG-13. Directed by Scott Derrickson. Fantasy/Science fiction. 1h 55m.

What the Critics Say:

“Visually and conceptually, Doctor Strange owes more to the inverted physics of Inception and the East-meets-West chopsocky of The Matrix trilogy. As storytelling, however, it’s MCU business as usual.” – A.V. Club

“Benedict Cumberbatch is unpredictable and intriguing as the Marvel superhero in a brain-melting tale that reinvigorates the genre.” – The Guardian

Our Take: Wow... Talk about good reviews! Can’t wait to see Benedict Cumberbatch slay as a superhero; this one definitely requires a trip to the theater.

Rated PG. Directed by Mike Mitchell and Walt Dohrn. Fantasy/Adventure. 1h 33m.

What the Critics Say:

“What's the nature of happiness? Trolls is the right film to pose that question, because it's an ecstatically happy movie, a giddy EDM kiddie musical that sends you out on a high.” – Variety

“Make no mistake: Kids are going to love this movie.” – Common Sense Media

Our Take: Get ready for some out of con-TROLL fun this weekend! Trust us: round up the kids and go see Trolls – they will absolutely adore this movie, and you’ll also get quite a kick out of these cute and charming characters…

Hacksaw Ridge

The true story of Pfc. Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield), who won the Congressional Medal of Honor despite refusing to bear arms during WWII on religious grounds. Doss was drafted and ostracized by fellow soldiers for his pacifist stance but went on to earn respect and adoration for his bravery, selflessness and compassion after he risked his life – without firing a shot – to save 75 men in the Battle of Okinawa. Also starring Vince Vaughn, Teresa Palmer, Sam Worthington, and Luke Bracey.

Rated R. Directed by Mel Gibson. Drama/Action. 2h 18m.

What the Critics Say:

“The film pretends to be a grim reckoning with the horrors of war, but it is also, true to its genre, a rousing celebration of the thrills of battle.” – The NYTimes

“If Hacksaw Ridge occasionally, or even often, veers into overkill territory, at least it’s a picture alive with grim vitality.” – Time

Our Take: History and combat buffs: this one is for you. This film is thrilling and triumphant, and the reviews avidly applaud Mel’s behind-the-camera brilliance. A true war story, Hacksaw Ridge will move you.
