Westchester’s Ridge Hill Adding “iFLY”
Indoor Skydiving Coming to Yonkers
Yonkers, NY—Thursday, July 10, 2014—Forest City Ratner Companies, the developer and owner of Westchester’s Ridge Hill, announced today that they are adding an indoor skydiving facility – one of only 14 in the entire United States – to their Yonkers project. iFLY Indoor Skydiving, the world leader in design, sales and operations of wind tunnels, will break ground this fall with an estimated completion date in early 2015. The addition of this new, family-friendly interactive sports facility will extend and grow Ridge Hill’s status as an entertainment destination for the mid-Atlantic region.
“At Ridge Hill we’ve built a center that is a super-regional shopping, dining and entertainment destination. The unique thrill of indoor skydiving at iFLY will complement the existing offerings and further strengthen Ridge Hill as a magnet for families and area residents,” said Kathryn Welch, Executive Vice President of Forest City Ratner Companies.
The iFLY experience perfectly replicates the adrenaline-charged sensation of a skydiving free fall. The experience is powered by four fans located at the top of the building that create a cushion of air within the wind tunnel on which a person can safely float. No special skills are required and almost anyone over the age of 3 can experience the sensation of free fall without having to jump out of an airplane.
“Ridge Hill has been a strong community partner in building a center that attracts families to the region for entertainment, shopping and dining,” said Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano. “IFLY represents an exciting entertainment experience for Yonkers residents, and will bring new visitors to our city from across the region.”
“The iFly at Ridge Hill project will be a marquee destination for everyone from families and tourists to the Army’s West Point parachute team,” said City Council President Liam McLaughlin. “The council will continue to prioritize job-creating projects like this one that have the added benefit of making Yonkers the premier destination in Westchester to live, work and play,” said Liam McLaughlin, President, Yonkers City Council.
“We build one of the most unique entertainment experiences available – one that not only inspires people to try something new, but also to realize their childhood dream of flying without strings attached,” said iFLY VP of Projects Tyler Andrews. “It is a thrill to be able to bring this experience to the greater New York area and we are pleased to be working with Westchester’s Ridge Hill team.”
The innovation of wall-to-wall airflow in a skydiving simulator was created by skydiving enthusiasts in 1998 hoping to bring the thrill of a free fall experience to more people. Their first site in Orlando, Florida immediately became popular among professionals and novices alike. With this new technology and the commitment to customer satisfaction, indoor skydiving has become an expanding entertainment attraction. iFLY now has 32 tunnels in operation around the world, with the next closest to Yonkers being in Nashua, NH.
